Open Division Fall 2009 Packet

(online version)
June 18, 2009

Dear Parents,

We hope you are enjoying this beautiful summer! The school staff is busy gearing up for our Kids Camp next week, June 22 - 26 and Summer Intensive, July 6 – 31 (there are still spots available in both programs, so if you want to sign up, it isn’t too late!). We are also looking forward to the Fall 2009 Semester, and hope that you all will be joining us for another fun and productive year.

Included in this blog is your official Fall 2009 Packet. We have mailed a hard copy of this packet to you today as well. Your packet contains:

1. Fall 2009 Class Schedule by Level
2. Updated Dress Code Information
3. 2009 – 2010 School Year Calendar
4. Copy of BSJS Policies

Please review your schedule, dress code and calendar carefully. We advise adding important dates from the School Year Calendar to your personal calendar now, such as when the school is closed for holidays and parent observation weeks. Also, please note that your Fall 2009 deposit ($100) is due by Friday, July 10. You can register for fall now, if you wish, by calling the School Registrar at (408) 288-2820 x 223.

Please note, there are some changes to the class schedule for some levels, which we have tried to make as small and painless as possible. We are happy that we will be able to start some classes at 4:30 p.m. this semester instead of 5:00 p.m., and also to separate some previously combined levels.

Also, we have added more detail to the dress code, by providing specific brands and product numbers to the items required for caractere, jazz, flamenco and also, for the boys. As noted in the Dress Code Information, if you have already purchased an item that is not the same brand but still fits your child, we do not expect you to buy something new until your child has outgrown what they are currently wearing (exception: boys t-shirts must be worn, starting July 6). These updates are made to streamline all dress code items going forward, and will hopefully make the guessing game when shopping, a little easier. All these items will be available at Victoria’s Dance and Costumes in San Jose (we recommend asking to speak to Nick). You may also find good prices online, if you know your size. We will continue to carry the basic uniform for girls and boys, but we will not be able to carry the jazz, flamenco, caractere dress code (or dance belts for boys) in the school shop.

NEW! Soon, we will have a special loading zone, for parents to drop off their children on N. 1st Street, just past our building. We have been assured by the City of San Jose that loading zone signs will be posted as soon as possible. Parents will be able to get out of their cars and walk their children across the light rail tracks and to the front door of the school without being ticketed!

We hope to see you this summer and especially in the fall, as we would love to continue working with your students, building on the progress they made in the 2008 – 2009 school year.

Thank you for choosing to enroll your child at Ballet San Jose School, and enjoy the rest of your summer!

Lise la Cour, School Director and Kristin Bertrand, School Administrative Director

Enrolled students who, due to injury or serious illness, are forced to withdraw prior to the end of the full semester should inform the School office immediately with a letter of medical release. Such students may be eligible for partial refund.

Semesters
Tuition is charged per semester. The Fall Semester runs September through January. The Spring Semester runs February through late May. During the summer, a Kids’ Dance Camp is offered for one week followed by a four-week Summer Intensive in July.

Attendance
Students are required to attend all scheduled classes and are expected to inform the School office at 408.288.2820 x 223 of an intended absence prior to class. Attendance will be taken in every class. The School does not provide “make-up” classes.

Mandatory Dress Code
For Professional and Open Division boys and girls: please see the Professional and Open Division Class Schedules.

Performance Opportunities
Ballet San Jose School students are encouraged to participate in School and Company performances to supplement their classroom training. Student performances are typically scheduled as follows:

Nutcracker: Open 2A, 2B, 2C, 3 and Pro 1, 2, 3, 4 students who meet the specified height requirements and are available for all scheduled rehearsals and performances are eligible to audition for the Nutcracker. Performance opportunities are also available to Professional Division students as selected by the Artistic Director.

Spring Performances: Lise la Cour’s Fairy Tale Ballet Performance in the California Theatre (Professional Division only) and Annual School Showcase in Studio A and E (Professional and Open Division) in May.

Advancement
Level promotion is subject to each individual student’s development and is at the discretion of the School Director. Students will not necessarily be promoted to a higher level on an annual basis. To Make A Proper Ballet Bun:

What do I need?
• Hair brush with nylon or natural bristles (close bristles)
• 2 Large, covered hair elastics
• Nylon hair net (matching hair color-available in most drug stores)
• Thick hair pins (not bobby pins). Hair pins (U shape) are thicker and will grip more hair. Bobby pins will slide out of your bun. Bobby pins can be used to secure hair net and any loose pieces of hair that do not fit into the ponytail (for shorter hair).
• Hair spray
• Hair gel
• Spray bottle with water (for unruly hair)

How do I make the bun?
1. Brush hair smooth and free of tangles. For unruly hair, wet hair with spray bottle and comb through gel beforehand.
2. Pull hair back neatly into a ponytail at the back of the head or higher using a brush, and then a comb or soft brush to avoid "lumps and bumps" until hair is completely tight and smooth. A tidy pony tail with hair drawn snugly back is the key to making a good ballet bun. Placement of your ponytail determines placement of your bun. Ballet buns should be at the slightly higher than the middle of the head.
3. Secure ponytail tightly with 2 hair elastics.
4. Use plenty of hair spray to eliminate any "whisps" around the head, smoothing any remaining bumps of hair on the head.
5. Twist the ponytail as you gradually wrap it around the hair elastic, creating a tight, flat, coiled circle,
inserting hair pins as you wrap. Be sure that your hair pins contain hair from both the head and the ponytail. This will hold your bun close to your head. Be sure to use plenty of hair pins (12-16 on average).
6. The idea is to have your bun tightly wound in a flat coil around your elastic and secured to your head.
7. Once you have created your bun, wrap your hair net around it as many times as it will allow for a snug fit.
8. Hold the hair net in place with a few extra bobby pins, and hair spray or gel any whisps that are remaining.

Short Hair
• Short hair must be slicked back with gel and hairspray, and secured with a black elastic headband, bobby pinned to the head so that it will not slide and become a distraction to the student. Must withstand jumping and turning.
• No hair may be hanging in the face.
• Use bobby pins to secure any dangling strands of hair around face and back of neck.

Important Information for Open Division Students Regarding Showcase Week: May 11 - 16, 2009

Dear Parents,

Ballet San Jose School’s Showcase Week is less than a month away! Please read this letter carefully, as it provides important information regarding your child’s participation in Showcase Week.

Showcase Week Description:
All Open Division students (levels 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, Open 3) will be participating in formal class demonstrations for their family members in Studio A, during the week of May 11 – 16. Each class has a specific date and time they will be performing their class demonstrations. During this week, the class demonstrations will be held in place of normal class times. Open division students will still have regular classes during their final week, May 18 – 23.

There will be no additional rehearsal hours for Showcase Week, and all demonstrations will be held at Ballet San Jose School.

Students do not need to purchase a costume. Students must wear their school uniform, and girls must have their hair in a perfect bun. No jewelry or makeup. The demonstrations will last up to 30 minutes, followed by 15 minutes for parents to take photographs and videos which are permitted only AFTER the demonstration is finished.

There is no fee for Showcase Week, and attendees do not need to purchase tickets. Attendees are encouraged to give a suggested donation of any amount on the day of their students’ demonstration. A donation box will be set up in Studio A for this purpose.

The Little Mermaid is a separate event, performed by only the students in the Professional Division (Pro 1, Pro 2, Pro 3, Pro 4, Pro 5 and Pro 6). This will be performed at the California Theatre in downtown San Jose, on May 30 and 31st at 1:30 p.m. We encourage all of our students in the Open Division to attend this performance with their families, as a part of their dance education. You can purchase tickets for The Little Mermaid here:
http://www.balletsanjose.org/Mermaid09.htm

Below, you will see the Showcase Week schedule. Please check to see when your student will be performing in their class demonstration, as some of the demonstration times are different from regular class times.

We look forward to seeing all of our students’ families during Showcase Week! Please note, unlike parent observation week, families are only invited to watch their own student’s classes, as seating is limited.

Thank you and best regards,
Kristin Bertrand
